Jacob Lindley (JL) was the first president of Ohio University from 1809 to 1822. He came to the presidency from the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church of neighboring Waterford, Ohio. JL had the task of organizing the academy (a preparatory school) and college, and implementing a classical curriculum. After asking to be relieved from the presidency, JL continued as a minister. Charles Henry Grosvenor (CHG) was an attorney, a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, and a United States Congress representative for 20 years. CHG grew up in Athens, Ohio. He was responsible for persuading Andrew Carnegie to provide funds for a library at Ohio University. Constance Leete (CL) is his granddaughter through his second wife Louise Currier.
